Terms of Service

Last updated: February 23, 2026

TL;DR

Comet is a desktop app that runs entirely on your machine. It connects directly to your MongoDB instances — no data passes through our servers. AI features use your own API keys and go directly to your chosen provider. The software is currently free during beta and provided as-is. We may introduce pricing later with advance notice.

1. License

Handcraft Code grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Comet application ("Software") for personal or commercial purposes. The Software is licensed, not sold. You may not reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, or create derivative works from the Software. You may not redistribute, sublicense, or resell the Software.

2. Beta Software

The Software is currently in a beta testing period and is provided free of charge. During the beta period, features may be incomplete, changed, or removed without notice. The beta period may end at any time. We reserve the right to introduce paid tiers, modify pricing, or change the feature set at any time with reasonable notice. No commitment is made to maintain free access indefinitely.

3. Database Connections

Comet connects directly from your device to your MongoDB instances. No database credentials, connection strings, queries, or document data are transmitted to Handcraft Code or any third party through Comet. You are solely responsible for securing your own database instances, managing access credentials, and maintaining backups. Comet is not liable for data loss, corruption, or unauthorized access resulting from operations performed through the Software.

4. AI Features

Comet's AI features use third-party providers via API keys you supply ("Bring Your Own Key"). When you use AI features:

  • Your API keys are stored locally on your device only. Comet never transmits your keys to our servers.
  • AI requests are sent directly from your device to your chosen provider (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI-compatible services). Comet does not proxy, intercept, or log these requests.
  • For CLI-based providers (Claude CLI, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI), Comet invokes locally installed tools. Those tools are governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
  • AI-generated outputs may be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate. You must exercise your own judgment before acting on AI suggestions, especially for write or delete operations.
  • You are responsible for any API costs incurred through your own keys and for reviewing your provider's terms of service and data handling practices.

5. Updates

Comet may check for updates by making periodic requests to our update server. These checks transmit only standard HTTP headers — no user data, device identifiers, or usage information is included. Updates may be delivered through the in-app updater. We are under no obligation to provide updates, maintenance, or support.

6. Intellectual Property

Handcraft Code retains all rights, title, and interest in the Software, including all copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights. These terms do not grant you any rights to use Handcraft Code's or Comet's names, logos, or trademarks.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Software is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Software will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that defects will be corrected. Use of the Software is at your sole risk.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Handcraft Code shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, revenue, or business opportunities arising from your use of the Software. Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising from or relating to these terms or the Software shall not exceed fifty US dollars (US $50).

9. Termination

You may stop using the Software at any time by uninstalling it. We may terminate or suspend your license at any time for any reason. Upon termination, you must cease all use of the Software and delete all copies.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Software after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

11. Governing Law

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles.
